Orthodontics deals with the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of dental and facial disorders. Orthodontic treatment directs the development of the jaw at an early age, helping the teeth to settle in the correct positions on the jaw. In adults, it provides correction of existing crowding and bite disorders.
Orthodontic treatment can be fixed or removable.
1. Fixed Treatments
– Bracket application: Brace treatment consists of the use of archwires, brackets and elastics. After creating a force and tension between the teeth with the mechanics created by these materials, a gradual change in the position of the teeth is achieved. In order to achieve the targeted result, the brackets are checked regularly, at monthly intervals, and necessary adjustments are made.
– Fixed Retainers: They are used in cases where the deciduous teeth are lost early and there is a single missing tooth. Until the permanent tooth erupts, the other teeth are prevented from shifting into the gap, thus preventing crowding.
2- Moving Apps
These are orthodontic appliances that patients use by putting on and taking off by themselves.
– RPE (rapid palatal expansion) jaw expanding appliances: Provides expansion of the upper jaw.
– Retainer: It is a form of treatment that allows the teeth to be corrected with the use of transparent plates without braces. It is also used as a reinforcement appliance.
– Removable retainers: They serve the same function as fixed retainers. They are used in cases where more than one tooth is missing.
– Removable reinforcements: Passive appliances used to maintain the position of the teeth when the treatment is over.
– Headgear: It is an extraoral device that can be applied in children during growth and development to move the upper jaw backwards when the upper jaw is positioned in front. It slows the development of the upper jaw and allows the anterior teeth to move backwards while keeping the posterior teeth where they are. Various types are available.
